Buying a used car with a soft top: What to look for?

Many car enthusiasts love the idea of buying a convertible to get the open-air driving experience. However, this usually comes at an increased price. Buying a used car with a soft top can be a great way to get the experience at a more affordable price. Soft tops usually can be obtained for cheaper prices compared to a hard-top convertible, due to having fewer mechanical components. However, it’s important to be aware of certain factors when shopping for a used car with a soft top, including the condition of the top itself, the vehicle’s history, and overall wear and tear. From checking for leaks to inspecting the fabric, it’s important to be mindful of the potential issues when buying a used car with a soft top. Know what to look for to ensure you’re getting a reliable and safe vehicle.

Soft top fabric condition

The first thing to check when buying a used car with a soft top is the condition of the fabric. Look for any signs of wear and tear, such as rips, tears, discoloration fading, or cracking, this may indicate that the vehicle top requires replacement soon. Another sign of poor maintenance is hints of water damage or mildew. It’s also a good idea to check the condition of the plastic or metal framework that supports the soft top. Look for any signs of rust or damage, as these can be expensive to repair.

Water damage and leaks

Another key consideration when buying a used car with a soft top is to check for leaks. Soft tops are more prone to leaks than hard tops, so it’s important to make sure that the vehicle does not have any water damage. The canvas material on top should be a waterproof material, however, general wear over time can reduce the efficacy of the rooftop sealant, and without adequate maintenance and replacement, can lead to the vehicle losing its waterproofing. Damage, rips, or tears are also another easy way for method for water to leak into the vehicle. Check the interior of the car, including the seats and flooring, for any signs of water damage. If the soft top has been poorly installed, there is a chance that water can seep in from the rubber seals between the top and the windows. These seals can wear out over time so it is essential to check the condition of them.

Soft top functionality

It’s also important to check the functionality of the soft top. Make sure that the top can be raised and lowered smoothly and that all the latches and locks are in good working condition. If the soft top is not working properly, it can be costly to fix, and it may indicate that the vehicle has not been well-maintained. Take the car for a test drive with the top down to check for any wind noise or leaks. Also check if the boot cover, which covers the top when folded, is present and in good condition.

Assessing Vehicle History & Soft Top Condition

Another aspect to consider when buying a used car with a soft top is the maintenance history. A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to have problems with the soft top, so it’s important to find out if the vehicle has been serviced regularly. Be sure to review the vehicle’s history before making a purchase. When negotiating with the owner, make sure to ask for a full-service history report, and whether the car has undergone any additional modifications, alternative soft-top installations, or customisation. The service history report will give you information on any accidents, repairs, or damage to the vehicle, which will help you determine the car’s overall condition. Find out when the vehicle’s soft top was last washed and sealed properly, or if it has had any issues in the past such as leaks. It’s also a good idea to have a trusted mechanic inspect the car, specifically look for any signs of water damage and past accident repairs.

Overall vehicle wear and tear
In addition to checking the soft top and reviewing the vehicle’s history, it’s important to also look at the overall wear and tear of the vehicle. This includes checking the condition of the paint, tires, brakes, and other mechanical components. Look for any signs of rust or corrosion, which can indicate that the vehicle has been exposed to moisture. Check the condition of the tires to see if they need to be replaced. Also, take the car for a test drive to check for any unusual noises or vibrations.

5 Soft Top Care Do’s and Don’ts

Here at Prestige Soft Tops, we are passionate about convertibles, especially soft tops! If you are a convertible owner, and particularly if your car has a vinyl or fabric roof, you probably understand the importance of caring for and maintaining your convertible roof. But, doing so is not exactly as simple as you might initially think.

Convertibles cannot be maintained in the same way as a regular car, and your particular roof needs special care and attention regularly, in order to preserve both its appearance and its functionality. This involves not only choosing the right products for your roof but also applying the right cleaning methods, as well as taking other measures to protect your pride and joy.

At Prestige Soft Tops, we love talking all things convertibles and convertible roof replacement, so we are happy to share these cleaning and care dos and don’ts with you.

convertible car with soft top roof

Do: Clean your Roof Properly

This means choosing the best products to work with the material of your roof and applying and using them correctly when it comes to cleaning. For everything, you will need to clean your convertible roof, check out our range of recommended cleaning products.

For vinyl roofs, you need to use a great vinyl, fabric, and canvas cleaner, and all you need to do is gently brush the solution onto your roof with a soft-bristled brush. Take a look at this Wikipedia page about vinyl roofs, for more information about vinyl.

The same Bowden’s Own solution can be used for fabric roofs, though a brush with slightly firmer bristles would be handy.

Important: NEVER use a solvent-based cleaner on either your vinyl or fabric soft top.

Don’t: Use an automatic car wash

In order to be safe when you own a soft top convertible, it is best to stick to handwashing only. When you hand wash your vinyl or fabric roof, you can ensure that you apply the correct amount of pressure during cleaning, whether you use a hose, a high-pressure sprayer on a lower-pressure setting, or a brush.

In contrast, an automatic car wash may be too harsh for your roof and use water pressures that could be harmful to your roof. While the official word from some manufacturers may be that automatic car washes are okay for these roofs, we recommend hand washing at all times to be on the safe side.

Do: Protect Your Vinyl or Fabric Roof

Just as prevention is key to maintaining anything valuable, protection is key as well when it comes to your roof maintenance. A vinyl or fabric protectant is an essential step after cleaning and is designed to act as a sort of sunscreen, protecting your roof from the harsh UV rays of the sun.

At Prestige Soft Tops, we recommend this vinyl restorer and protector for vinyl roofs, and this fabric protector for fabric roofs.  Remember to always use the correct product on your roof – that is, the one that corresponds with the particular material of your soft top.

Important note: you must make sure that your roof is totally dry before applying the protectant.

Don’t: Leave your Convertible Roof Down Overnight

It is important that you don’t leave your roof down overnight or for an extended period of time, for more than one reason. Leaving your roof retracted for long periods can expose the interior to the elements, such as rain, wind, and the harshness of the sun.

In addition, when you leave a vinyl or fabric roof retracted, (or folded down), there is the potential for folds or creases to appear in the material of the roof. It is even possible for cracks to form over a very long time, and in this case, it is possible that the only way to fix these imperfections is to replace the entire roof. So, our tip is when leaving your convertible, always remember to put the roof up!

Do: Replace your Soft Top When Necessary

All these tips and tricks will help to preserve and extend the life of your vinyl or fabric roof, but at the end of the day, after a number of years, your roof will need replacing. Check out our FAQ’s about convertible top replacement to understand more, and then choose experts in convertible roof replacement, and that means contacting Prestige Soft Tops.

Whether you’re a convertible owner, or maybe an aspiring one, here at Prestige Soft Tops, we understand your passion, and share it. We’re convertible fanatics and soft tops enthusiasts, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than some convertible facts. Keep reading to gain an insight into some of the history, terminology, features, and facts about the car we all know and love so much.

Close up of a soft top convertible

Convertible or Cabriolet?

What’s in a name? You have probably heard both of the terms “convertible” and “cabriolet” to describe a car with a retracting or foldable roof. So, which is the proper term? The simple answer is this: both.

Cabriolet is the term that came first and was originally used to describe a type of carriage. These carriages were first designed with two wheels, and a foldable roof, and were pulled by a single horse. Later designs had four wheels, and an extra seat for the driver. Have a look at Britannica for some interesting information about the origins of the word cabriolet.

The further you look into terminology, the more names and nicknames you get, from cabrio, open top, and even spider.

So, what is in a name? Well, when it comes to the convertible, almost anything goes!

Convertible Design Features

There are a number of structural and design features that work together in a convertible car, some of which may not immediately come to mind. Read on to learn about some of the lesser-known features of convertibles.

Rear Window: The rear window is an important part of the convertible car. In modern times, the rear window of a soft top convertible can be made of glass, though traditionally, they were made of plastic.

Wind Blocker: The function of a wind blocker can be found in its name: it acts to block wind from reaching the passengers in the car. Also known as a wind deflector, this feature attempts to solve one of the most common convertible complaints – exposure to wind and subsequent noise.

Tonneau Cover: A tonneau cover is commonly used to describe a hard or soft cover placed over the bed of a ute, though it also has another meaning. In the context of a convertible car, a tonneau is a cover that protects the passenger seats from the sun and other elements, when the soft or hard roof is retracted.

The Invention of the Soft Top Convertible

The history of the convertible is somewhat murky and some of the facts are a little hard to discern, but there are some things about the invention of convertibles that are clear. The very first cars invented were open-air cars, with no roofs and sometimes no sides, as they were modelled after horse-drawn carriages, or the cabriolets we mentioned above.

As early as the end of the 1800s, these first cars came to have roofs made of leather or fabric, that folded back to convert the car to its open-roof mode. It was not until the early 1920s that a manually retractable hard top roof was invented by Ben P. Ellerbeck, and not until 1934 that a fully mechanical retractable hard roof convertible was released by Peugeot.

It is these early 20th century models that paved the way for the convertible cars that we know today, and no doubt as technology keeps evolving and our needs keep changing, we will see many more advancements in these vehicles.

Types of Soft Tops

Did you know that there is more than one type of soft top? That’s right – your roof could belong in one of two categories. Read on to find out which one yours belongs in.

Vinyl: The use of vinyl for convertible tops dates back to those early convertibles that were modelled after carriages. Vinyl is still used today as it is a durable material that looks visually appealing and is fairly easy to clean and maintain.

Cloth: Comparably a little more difficult to clean than vinyl, cloth tops are used today as they too are durable and deflect noise slightly better than vinyl. They require slightly more effort when it comes to maintenance.

Whether yours is a vinyl or cloth roof, Prestige Soft Tops can help with all your maintenance needs. Check out our cleaning guide for all the information you could need on safely cleaning your roof and to discover our range of recommended cleaning products.

How Should I Wash my Soft Top Convertable?

If you are a car lover like us at Prestige Soft Tops, chances are it is important to you to keep your soft top clean and looking at its best. Luckily, we know a thing or two about convertible maintenance and can share with you some tips and tricks on how to wash your soft tops.

Can water damage your soft top?

The answer is yes – In some cases holding a high-pressure water sprayer too close to a soft top, new or old, will damage the fibres and leave unsightly visible patterns that can’t be removed.

Under normal conditions though, your soft top should be waterproof if installed correctly. During rain, water will drain off the canvas in a manner like an umbrella. The vinyl-coated fabric material used for the soft top is durable and will resist rainfall and water for years. The inside of your vehicle will be protected unless there are holes, leaks, or tares. Water is most likely to leak from the rubber seals between the top and windows, rather than the canvas itself. If you notice consistent leakage into your vehicle, keep an eye on the rubber seals as they may need replacement.

If water continues to be an issue, then there may be a problem with the installation of the convertible top on the vehicle. For any questions or convertible top replacements, feel free to get in contact with a member of our team for a consultation.

How can I protect my soft top?

To keep your soft top in the best condition possible, avoid leaving it exposed to harsh elements for prolonged periods of time. Extensive sun exposure can cause damage over time. If possible, keep the vehicle under a carport or garage if you want to ensure a long lifespan. Whilst soft tops are waterproof, a garage can also protect from falling branches, animal droppings and hail.

Use a soft top brush when washing the car to dislodge the dirt particles from the fabric fibres. This process should be sufficient for cleaning most of the time. However, we do recommend using a dedicated soft top cleaner once a month for a ‘deep clean’ if you want to make sure your top is always looking brand new. Do not use solvent-based (alcohol, vinegar, bleach) or household cleaners on soft tops. The chemical compounds within these products can cause damage to the sealant on your soft top. Erosion of the sealant over time can lead to a shorter lifespan and lasting damage.

Deep Cleans

Prestige Soft Tops has partnered with Bowden’s Own for a range of tested, high-quality soft top care products. We recommend using these for your monthly ‘deep clean’ of the vehicle roof.

Begin by giving the roof a thorough hose down. As mentioned earlier, never use a high-pressure cleaner at close range, a wide fan from 50cm is as close as a pressure washer should get.

Apply Sublime Clean over the wet roof, spray generously to let the cleaner soak into the fibres and dislodge grim. Use a gentle soft top brush to scrub the fabric, in a horizontal linear motion. It’s important not to use a circular motion, or be too aggressive, as this can cause damage to the roof fibres. After scrubbing, rinse off the foamy sublime and clean with the hose again. Don’t let the sublime clean dry into the fabric. This can be avoided by applying and scrubbing in small sections. Use a detailing brush to apply and scrub the edges of the roof for a more thorough clean.

Use a soft microfibre towel and lie it down on the fabric’s surface. Pat the towel gently to help it absorb moisture from the material. Then, flip the towel and place it in the next section and repeat. After this process is completed across the whole roof, leave the vehicle to dry completely for a couple of hours, and use a lint roller to remove any leftover fibres from the towel on the roof.

Fabric Protection:

Factory new soft tops come with a protective sealant integrated into the fabric to protect the roof from the elements. However, this sealant will degrade over time and use. To keep your roof in the best condition, reapplying the protective sealant will be required.  A deep clean is essential before applying for any fabric protection.

Can my convertible go through a car wash?

This depends on the model of the convertible. For more information, look at the website or manual of the specific car model, or feel free to give us a call and we might be able to provide some clarity. While many soft-top convertibles ‘can’ or ‘are safe’ to go through an automatic car wash, it might not be recommended to maintain the quality of the fabric over time. We recommend using approved soft top cleaning products for your vehicle, and handwashing, following the steps above. If you do use an automatic car wash, make sure your roof is up!

FAQ’s About Convertible Top Replacement

Car enthusiasts, (including us), love the idea of driving a soft top convertible, but some are hesitant to take the leap and install one because they want to learn more first and have a lot of questions. At Prestige Soft Tops, we are here to clarify any details or misconceptions that are frequently asked about convertible top replacement and installation, so you can learn how to take the best care of your vehicle and make the decision about whether a soft top convertible is the right choice for you.

How much does a convertible top replacement cost on average?

The answer to this question honestly depends on the make or model of the vehicle. If you have a specific convertible in mind, make sure you use the convertible top replacement service filter to figure out the specific make, model or parts you require for your convertible top replacement. The cost can range from $200~ for specific parts to $2500 for full replacements of high-end vehicles with heated glass and rain guards.

What is the average convertible top lifespan?

Most premium convertible tops should last 10 years or more if you take good care and caution with the vehicle. At Prestige Soft Tops, we noticed a lack of high quality, aftermarket soft tops for sale in Australia. We are so committed to the quality of our products, that we offer a warranty on all our tops when they are fitted by a professional installer.

Can I replace soft tops myself?

Soft top installation can be a difficult and tedious process for anyone that doesn’t have experience or qualifications such as a motor trimmer or mechanic. Fitting a soft top may take hours of time and patience. Therefore, for those unfamiliar with car assembly, we do recommend getting the top installed at one of our partner stores across Australia. If in doubt, feel free to give us a call.
Fitting tips are included with many of the tops upon delivery, and the warranty is not voided if you install the top yourself, provided you have completed the job correctly.

How long does replacement take?

With a trained installation professional, a convertible top replacement job may require around 8 hours (give or take). The timing will depend on the experience of the professional, and whether the alignment is completed correctly. Mistakes and other maintenance may lead to an extension of this time guideline. Completing an installation at home will most likely take longer, especially without access to specialist tools and equipment.

Are convertibles car wash friendly?

The answer to this once again depends on the model of the car. If you are unsure, have a look at the website of the specific vehicle you are searching for, or feel free to give us a call. Keep in mind that while many soft-top convertibles ‘can’ or ‘are safe’ to go through an automatic car wash, it might not be recommended to maintain the quality of the fabric over time. For washing the actual convertible top, we highly recommend hand washing with a soft brush to remove dirt from the fibres. No solvent-based cleaners should be used on soft top fabrics.

How should I store my convertible?

The best place to store a convertible is in a garage to protect it against the elements. The next best is under a hard outdoor shelter to protect the top from fading from sunlight or getting damaged by twigs, branches, or other external factors.

What should I do to take care of my convertible top?

Make sure you are utilising the correct maintenance and cleaning materials for your convertible top, if you want to learn more, we have a range of supplies available in our store. A simple wash with a soft brush during every car wash will clear out dirt from the fibres, however, we recommend using an approved cleaner monthly. If you can’t protect your car from the Australian weather with a garage, then luckily, there are fabric protectants available to keep the top in great condition all year round.

If you have any more questions about convertible top replacement, maintenance or more, feel free to check out our FAQ page and find our more specific details. Or, if you have specific questions about your vehicle or one you plan on purchasing, please feel free to get in contact with us for professional, quality advice.

If you would like to enquire about one of our products or require assistance, please do not hesitate to email us at sales@prestigetops.com.au or fill out our online contact form so one of our team members can get back to you ASAP.

5 Things that Can Damage Your Convertible Soft Top

For many car fanatics, a drive in an open top car can be something religious. Being exposed to the outdoor wind, speed and sound elements of a convertible with an open soft top adds a whole new level of enjoyment to any drive. While convertibles with soft tops look great aesthetically, if not looked after correctly, the smiles from a luxurious drive can quickly turn into a frown. Outdoor elements and cleaning products you choose can make life rough for your top. Our experts at Prestige Soft Tops have put together a list of five things that pose particular dangers to most soft tops

Sunshine

Most soft tops materials are treated with protective products that can help prevent damage from exposure to outdoor elements such as sun rays. However, sealants can only do so much. Long term exposure from parking your car outside all day can result in UV rays damaging your soft convertible top. These destructive rays can eat away at your protective layer and slowly find their way into your soft top itself. Eventually, this causes colour fading and cracks on your convertible soft top. While there is no way to completely avoid the effects of sunlight, keeping your top protected by regularly applying a sealant and parking under the shade can help prolong your soft top’s life.

Branches

Since you need to protect your soft convertible top from the dangers of the sun, you might think parking your vehicle under a tree to keep it cool is a good idea. Doing this would, unfortunately, pose significant damage risks from low-hanging or falling branches. Branches of all shapes and sizes that have sharp edges and points can scratch, puncture and tear your soft top. While it is not possible to avoid driving or parking under every tree you see, making sure you park under a well-maintained and properly trimmed tree can reduce the risks of top damage.

Road Debris

Road debris includes grime, oil and rocks usually flung onto your soft top by surrounding vehicles driving past at high speeds. Purchasing a high-quality soft top that can handle rocks bouncing off its surface can help minimize damages such as cuts and punctures to your soft top. As for dirt, oil and grime, your best line of defence is to maintain and seal your top regularly. On top of reflecting UV rays, good sealants should prevent dirt from sticking to your soft top. Dust and dirt that settles on your soft top can weave into the fabric and begin to act like sandpaper, slowly deteriorating your soft top over time. Having to remove oils and grime off your soft top often also results in excessive washing which can weaken your soft top even if you use the best washing products. Think of it like brushing your teeth, while toothpaste contains all the necessary components to strengthen your teeth, excessive brushing would eventually break down your enamel and cause more harm than good.

Using the wrong cleaning products

The best way to keep your soft top looking like new is to keep it clean and protected. Keeping your top clean is easy and does not require much effort. In most situations, a simple rub with a soft brush will suffice. Once a month, washing your soft top with an approved cleaner will help. A common mistake with new soft top owners is using the wrong cleaning products. Solvent-based (alcohol, vinegar, bleach) or household cleaning products should be avoided at all costs when it comes to cleaning your soft top. The chemical components in these products can erode your protective sealant and deteriorate your soft top. Consulting soft top professionals or the manufacturer of your soft top for cleaning and care instructions can help ensure you’re using the right products for your car.

Cleaning soft top convertible with foam

Weather

Unpredictable weather can wreak havoc on your soft convertible top. As soft tops are typically made of vinyl or cloth, rain and humidity can settle into the pores of these materials just as dirt does. With sufficient moisture, your soft top will become a breeding ground for mould or mildew and you can expect the need to replace your soft top if the situation is not controlled.  It is vital to always protect your soft top from moisture and inclement weather per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Changes in Soft Top Styles

As the leading experts in soft tops in Australia, the team at Prestige Soft Tops is always interested in the changing styles of top-down motoring. While the classic aesthetic of a two-door Mazda MX-5 with a black soft top and sleek lines remains timeless, there are many other soft top looks to explore!

Regardless of the changes in colour, materiality or surface weave, the lightweight appeal of driving in a topless roadster along the open Australian roads never changes.

Soft Top Car Australia

The original style limitations of soft tops

When soft top technology first began in the 1920s with vinyl materials in early coupes, the colour palette was limited to neutral shades with not a lot of variability between vehicles. However, over the next 50 years, different versions of the soft top style emerged including:

  • The halo style involved the vinyl ending short of the tops of the side windows and windshield, forming a “halo” around the windshield.
  • The canopy style covers the front half of the roof.
  • The landau style covers only the back cabin of the vehicle, as little as a quarter or a third of the roof.
  • The full cover style protects the whole top of the convertible.

While the first models of soft tops were mainly limited to vinyl-like materials, now many soft tops on the market are comprised of a careful collection of material layers for lightweight usage. Earlier soft top styles were manually removed and refastened, but with technology improvements many soft tops can be automatically positioned, have compact storage options or include rear window defrosters. Now composed of innovative, lightweight materials, improvements in soft tops also include more modern style changes.

Soft top looks to explore

In today’s market, there is a range of fabrics and colours available to personalise your convertible with a premium soft top. With more textures and eye-catching colours available than ever, convertible drivers can be spoiled for choice when choosing a soft top design and are no longer limited to a muted or neutral palette. Now convertibles can feature soft tops in contrasting and rich colours for a brighter, more personal look. For those that have already customised aspects of their convertibles, this could be an opportunity to select a medium green to match the custom interiors or rims.

Improving the look of soft tops is also important to manufacturers with multiple surface weave options available purely for aesthetic appeal. For instance, the Twillfast CR available for the Rolls Royce Dawn features inner layers that are crease-resistant, for a smoother, seamless look when assembling the roof after being stowed for a long period.

Mixing colours is also an option when choosing soft tops in Australia. Both cloth topping types and vinyl soft tops are comprised of the exterior facing fabric and the interior backing cloth, which allows a wealth of colour combination opportunities. This allows darker vehicles to maintain a sleek exterior with a matching black cloth soft top and include a brighter interior with a bolder colour.

What is the future for soft top design?

In recent years, our experts have seen improvements to the performance, technology and longevity of soft tops with a more diverse range of colours available to convertible drivers and cleaning products for improved soft top maintenance.

With continued advancements to the textures and lightweight feel of the soft tops, perhaps the customisation options will continue to expand with more widespread patterns and prints available for the interiors and exteriors of convertibles.

Top 4 Signs It’s Time For A Convertible Top Replacement

One of the fun parts of owning a convertible is having the versatility to pick between having a roof or no roof over your head. With the push of a button, you can easily have a nice cool breeze in your hair or good protection if you hit nasty weather. It is obvious that the convertible top is the primary appeal of the vehicle and plays an important emotional and visual role. Despite this, many owners struggle to identify if it’s time to invest in their car to get a convertible top replacement

Our team of professionals at Prestige Soft Tops have prepared a list of the top 4 signs your convertible top is due for a replacement.

convertible top replacement

1.     A hole in the top

Over the years, you’ll likely notice cracks on your convertible soft top which can come from normal wear and tear. Unfortunately, if no proper care is taken, raising and lowering your convertible top can result in cracks turning into holes. While this is an obvious reason to replace your convertible top, the number of convertible owners who choose to seal these holes with duct tape or layers of cling wrap as a long-term solution is alarming. Without a proper fix, moisture and dust can seep through regardless of how thick your duct tape “solution” is.

As moisture and dirt accumulate, you will begin to notice a damp smell and damage to the interior of your vehicle. This can sometimes be a slow process that may not be noticeable at first but once anything that can hold moisture such as the foam and carpet start to grow mould and mildew, getting rid of it will be costly. Not only that, but metal components in your car will also be susceptible to rust. If you let rust and mould run wild, you won’t end up just replacing your convertible top but possibly your entire car.

2.     Pulling at the seams

When a soft top is healthy, pulls or gaps at the seams of your convertible top should not be present. Much like clothes, when you start seeing seams unravel, pucker or rip, you know it is getting old and probably in need of a replacement – your convertible top is no different. The main two reasons a seams split are due to shrinkage of the canvas or vinyl adding stress to the seams and wear and tear due to folding of the seam during operation of the soft top.

A good way to check your convertible top for problems at the seams is to check it in four different positions; when it is up, when it is down and during both the raising and lowering process. This ensures that any irregularity at its seams will be identified before more damage occurs and your top rips completely.

3.     Discolouration

Most convertible top fabrics come from manufacturers with 1- to 6-year warranties, depending on the brand. If properly cared for and maintained, the original soft top colour should last throughout the warranty period. After this date range, however, discolouration will occur and is often a good sign the health of your top is beginning to wane due to environmental factors such as high levels of UV light.

Besides that, if you’re intending to sell your convertible, having an unsightly roof can significantly drag down the value of the car. Buyers will likely factor in the price of having the top replaced when negotiating a sale price. If you want a quicker sale and possibly more cash, get your convertible a new and clean top and better offers should start rolling in!

4.     Convertible top raises or lowers unevenly or requires help to operate

If your convertible top no longer raises or lowers the same way it did when you first got it, it is likely a sign that the convertible straps and or cables are comprised due to failure, binding, or aging. This compromised operation when raising or lowering the convertible top can put unnecessary strain on the motor system that operates it, causing it to prematurely wear out. To avoid damaging the motor, as soon as you notice any unevenness, it may be best to get it looked at and replaced.

A new convertible top installation can provide added safety, protection, and increased value for your vehicle. Why Are Soft Tops Better Than Hard Tops?

It’s likely that you have a specific car in mind when you want to purchase a new convertible top. However, if you don’t, you may be surprised at how many there are to choose from. The options include modern convertibles, sports, soft top convertibles, and hard top convertibles. Depending on their size, convertibles can range from two-seat roadster models to larger models with four seats. How to decide which one to choose?

INVEST IN A SOFT TOP

In comparison to hard top convertibles, soft tops are more modern, they look and feel more luxurious too. The soft top convertible looks more attractive due to its smooth lines. They retract automatically in seconds after you press the button. There are a few convertibles with retractable hard tops that can break into two or three pieces and lower elegantly into the trunk. Additionally, since they can be easily folded they take up less boot space when the roof is open and they offer more cargo space compared to hard tops. Often, hard tops require more space in the boot to store than soft tops.

Aside from being lighter, they’re also generally more affordable. Depending on the make and model, soft tops are usually made of fabric with a plastic or glass window in the back. If the window is not present, the tops are quite light. A soft top convertible will still be significantly lighter than a hard top even with the window. Hardtops are often heavier by more than 40 kilograms.

Weight is another factor that affects their use. Soft top convertibles are easier to use than hard tops and can be operated at a faster pace than hard tops, but we recommend not putting them up and down when you are driving.

SAFETY

Roll bars usually come with convertibles, either fixed or pop-up, so that passengers are protected in an accident. Most of the time, side airbags are optional on less expensive models but are considered a standard feature on premium drop tops. As an alternative to the side curtains found on solid-roof vehicles, many of these side airbags extend upward to protect the head. Features such as blind-spot warnings, parking sensors, and rear view cameras should be considered.

QUIETER AND PLEASANT DRIVE

Soft top convertibles make a quieter sound than hard top cabriolets when raindrops hit them. Soft tops are more versatile than hard tops due to their malleable nature. You can easily remove them and reinstall them so that you can enjoy those warm days without a top.

CONVENIENCE

Consider driving an off-road vehicle without the top on, taking advantage of the deployment capabilities of your soft top. You’re enjoying the outdoors while you’re connected to nature, but nature’s darker side is looming overhead. Before heavy rains hit, the soft top can be quickly and easily put back on your vehicle, keeping you and the interior dry. Hard tops require more time to deploy when compared to soft tops.

BETTER FOR YOUR BUDGET

Soft tops are also generally less expensive than hard tops. A hard top usually costs more since it requires more technology and electrical components to function.

The best thing about soft tops is their ease of repair. Replacing, repairing, and maintaining them is generally less expensive than maintenance for hard tops. They will, however, need to be replaced more often.
